The centenary 12 months of the beginning of poet and novelist George Mackay Brown sees the publication of three new books. A author who remembers him from her childhood recollects one of many twentieth century’s most authentic voices, whose work is permeated by his Catholicism
For my dad Ian’s seventieth birthday, George Mackay Brown wrote an acrostic which celebrates their friendship:

The varsity picture he’s remembering is, like all such, a time capsule. My dad is within the center, 5 years previous, bravely holding a slate on which is chalked “Infants 1”. George is on the sting. You possibly can see what Thomas Hardy known as “the household face” – Georgie Broon’s chin jutting, Ian MacInnes’ ears jutting extra. George is darkish; Ian honest. There’s poverty on this image, and solemnity. Most of all, there’s innocence. 1926. Residence-knitted socks. Youngsters with rickets and squints and naked ft.
